‘This performance is about the power of love – a
force that transcends death. As the narrative
grips us, we travel with Orfeo through the entire
spectrum of emotions, from the intoxication of
infatuation to the devastation of heartbreak.
The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice – and possibly this performance in particular – is also a
tribute to art itself,’ says Sasha Waltz.
The performance, which Waltz describes as
a choreographed opera, is a fusion of music,
singing and dance. Members of the chorus and
instrumental ensemble, soloists and dancers
are all handpicked on the basis of their ability
to express themselves across the boundaries
of genre. They complement one another and
move as a single entity.
Sasha Waltz’s predilection for early music has led
her to collaborate with several baroque ensembles, but this is her first time with the renowned
Freiburger BarockConsort. The music is honest
and direct, sensitive and passionate; the dancing
is indescribably beautiful.
