The purpose of homework is to improve the student ’ s understanding of the subject matter , to help the student assume greater responsibility , to offer opportunity for self-direction , and to reinforce basic skills . Homework should be provided for all students as an extension of their class work and should be generally comparable among similar grade level classes . Homework assignments may take many forms such as : observations , readings , writings , and individual or group activities .
Homework must : � Be completed outside of class . � Be a planned part of the curriculum and course of study . � Reflect the goals of the school district . � Reinforce skills needed by the student to complete assignments successfully . � Maintain class standards . � Be completed successfully within a reasonable amount of time . � Be designed to take into account the varying needs of students . � Be used as a positive measure and not as punishment . � Be used as part of the total evaluation of the student ’ s progress . � Be evaluated by the teacher and returned to the student .
Parents are encouraged to provide home conditions in which the student can most successfully accomplish the task . Homework plays a vital role in your scholastic program . As you mature , more and more responsibility is placed upon you . Doing your homework regularly is part of this responsibility . Homework is intended to help you practice . When you are having difficulty in any subject , you should take it upon yourself to ask for help . The teacher is available to help but it is your responsibility to ask for assistance . If you ask for help once and still need more , ask again . Remember your guidance counselor can also be of help if you are having difficulty with your work .
Student Surveys
The District will seek parental / guardian consent under the federal Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment ( PPRA ), N . J . S . A . 18A : 36-34 , and District Policy when administering surveys to students .

Parent / Teacher Organization ( PTO )
The Benjamin Franklin Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization conducts regular meetings in the school ’ s Media Center . The many committees and special events sponsored by the organization offer parents / guardians an opportunity to become involved in specific ways and according to individual interests or needs . You are encouraged to join and participate in this worthwhile organization that does so much to support all of our children . Whenever you are in the building , check the PTO bulletin board for news . The board is located on the second floor near our cafeteria .
