Marking System Letter grades for students may be accompanied by a + or – symbol. This plus or minus adds or subtracts to or from the quality of the letter grade earned by the student. Plus/minus grading is more fair and precise and gives students a better opportunity to improve grades. “A” Superior Accomplishment; considerably above grade level average a. The student has a thorough understanding of the subject matter, as evidenced by a variety of assessments. b. The student participates fully in classroom activities and discussions. c. The student does more work, of better quality, than is required of the class. d. The student presents original information related to classroom activity. e. The student is consistently prepared for class in that reading assignments are completed and written homework is of excellent quality. “B” Very good accomplishment; above grade level average a. The student has a good understanding of the subject matter, as evidenced by a variety of assessments. b. The student participates in classroom activities and discussions, exhibiting a high level of engagement. c. The student completes required work and the quality of the work is good. d. The student is prepared for class in that reading assignments are completed and written homework is of good quality. “C” Satisfactory accomplishment; at grade level average a. The student has a good understanding of the subject matter, as evidenced by a variety of assessments. b. The student participates in classroom activities and discussions. c. The student completes required work at an acceptable level. d. The student is generally prepared for class, although not enough effort may be given to reading assignments and/or the written homework is of average quality. “D” Minimum accomplishment; below grade level average a. The student has below average understanding of the subject matter, as evidenced by a variety of assessments. b. The student makes some effort to participate in classroom activities but effort is sporadic or minimal. c. The student completes required work at a level below the standard for class. d. The student is often not prepared for class. 26
