If a student will be absent for three or more days the parent/guardian is urged to arrange to pick up schoolwork by calling the Main Office at (201) 833-5450 prior to 8:30AM. Please be advised, 24-hour notice is needed for the Main Office to collect the homework assignments. If a student is absent fewer than three days, a student should contact a schoolmate for assignments. School Absences Because Of Family Vacations There are times when families plan vacations when school is in session. Students who are absent from school because of vacations cannot be excused from their scholastic obligations. Classroom time is uniquely beneficial to students to the degree that it cannot be replicated at an earlier or later time. The bulleted points below best represent the school’s attempt to address the issue so as to best support the goals of the school and the needs of the students:    Teachers are not obligated to provide assignments in advance for students. Students and parents are obligated to initiate the completion of specific assignments, etc. missed because of vacation during regularly scheduled school days. Teachers are expected to provide the same, reasonable make-up opportunities extended to students who experience an excused absence. Teachers are not expected to provide more time for students who missed school because of family vacations. In the event of unexcused absences, the following actions will be taken by the school: a. Up to four cumulative unexcused absences: 1. Make reasonable attempt to notify parent of each absence 2. Conduct investigation as to cause of each absence 3. Develop action plan to address absences 4. If child abuse/neglect is suspected, proceed in accordance with reporting requirements 5. Cooperate with law enforcement/other agencies as appropriate b. Between five and nine cumulative unexcused absences: 1. Make reasonable attempt to notify parent of each absence 2. Conduct investigation as to cause of each absence 3. Evaluate plan developed 4. Revised plan as needed 5. Cooperate with law enforcement/other agencies as appropriate c. Ten or more cumulative unexcused absences: 1. Mandatory referral to court program 2. Make reasonable attempt to notify parent of mandatory referral 3. Continue to consult with parent/involved agencies to support student’s return to school and regular attendance. 4. Cooperate with law enforcement/other agencies as appropriate 5. Proceed in accordance with Compulsory Education laws 13
