“In Gaza – The little children suffer!”

In Iraq the sins of our recent history return to haunt us. It transpires that the most effective weapons of mass destruction are men with guns. Here the code of chivalry among warring factions – if it ever existed - is totally absent as soldier slaughters civilian and captured enemies. There is no Geneva Convention here even after the military engagement ends, ISIS carries out mass executions, including live crucifixion, and recently threatened the minority sect of Yazidis with death unless they converted to Islam and forced the Christian population in a town in the province of Nineveh to flee for their lives. There are many allegations about the inhuman behavior of ISIS to captured troops and civilians but as it publicizes its atrocities including photographs of the murder of captured troops and a 30 minute video of executions, it is hard to deny their blood-soaked activities and the targeting of Shia Muslims and non-Muslims in the civilian population.

“Iraq – The Massacre”

In the Ukraine we have alleged Christians killing Christians; in Gaza, alleged Jew slaughters Muslim and in Iraq alleged Muslim slaughters Muslim. History is awash with an ocean of blood shed by men claiming to be acting for, or with the blessing of, some god or other. I know or have met really lovely people from a number of the world’s religions and I find it difficult to accept that religion itself is responsible. Power is a different concept and I would assert that most of the world’s evil emanates from the quest for power rather than a statement of faith no matter how fervent the claims to divine intent.

Where is God (by whatever name you call him) in all this? If you believe some “religious” people - In 2014 He has been:

- In Liberia and Sierra Leone striking down nearly 1000 civilians with Ebola;

- In China killing about 400 civilians in an earthquake in Yunnan;

- Sending wildfires to destroy the homes of thousands of Californians and Australians;

- Creating floods in Bosnia and Serbia killing about 80 people and this year affecting nearly 2 million people.

- In Southern Sudan where millions are threatened by famine

At the time of writing about 35 million people have died so far this year from all causes and there have been about 85 million births in the same period. Out of the 35 million deaths over 4.5 million were children under 5. (Statistics from “Worldometers”)

Is there an explanation for the actions in the Ukraine, Gaza and Iraq? I believe we can find it in Darwinism. Too many people have not evolved far enough.
