In the cartoon strip, “Lil’ Abner”, Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of one of DogPatch's earliest settlers, Hekzebiah Hawkins. The "homeliest gal in all them hills", she grew frantic waiting for suitors to come a-courtin'. When she reached the age of 35, still a spinster, her father was even more frantic—about Sadie living at home for the rest of her life. In desperation, he called together all the unmarried men of DogPatch and declared it "Sadie Hawkins Day". Specifically, a foot race was decreed; lie in an inversion of the myth of Atalanta, who, reluctant to marry, agreed to wed whoever could outrun her in a footrace.
"When ah fires [my gun], all o' yo' kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin—after givin' yo' a fair start—Sadie starts a runnin'. Th' one she ketches'll be her husbin." The town spinsters decided that this was such a good idea; they made Sadie Hawkins Day a mandatory yearly event, much to the chagrin of DogPatch bachelors.
In the satirical spirit that drove the strip, many sequences revolved around the dreaded Sadie Hawkins Day race. If a woman caught a bachelor and dragged him, kicking and screaming, across the finish line before sundown—by law he had to marry her.
With that background provided by The Purple Crayon we began the interview… (This is a great idea. Who came up with this idea? ~DeGrey) Jack_Bauer911: I did, with some help from Lil’ Abner. Thought it would be nice for the girl to ask the guys instead of the guys hammering on the girls all the time. (I know this is the 2nd month. How has the feedback been? ~DeGrey) Jack commented, “…been very good … funny... the original idea was for WGs to ask their favorite clients.” (The open concept seems to be more inclusive, eh? ~DeGrey) Yes, but we still like the WG idea too.... it’s not like any of them are WG in real life. (Err... beg to differ with you on that one, Jack but that is a whole different story. LoL ~DeGrey). Jack added, “I really like the idea of an old fashioned high school dance in the middle of the rest of the RLC craziness. I’m a little afraid to over the dance there because there are so many props. I’d like to try a dance in DogPatch and see if we are ok with lag. If you mention DogPatch make sure you mention Stacy_xox -- she and I built it.” (Yep.... very nice.)
Jack, asked, “Do you know snow_flake?” (You and snow_flake are Sadie Hawkins Dance Host & Hostess, yes? ~DeGrey)
She and I are partners on this. We had about 300 people here last month. Ohoooo! We came up with an idea of 1 month marriages, with “Marryn Sam” doin the marryn! (Hell... my 1st marriage here only lasted 28days! ~DeGrey)
Jack, reminded me, “So 30 days is perfect! I might even try it myself! This from the NEVER been married Jack Bauer!”
