Annemieke Austin, MD
Q: When did you move to Bend & what brought you here?
would truly hear
what I was trying
to communicate.
A: September 2016. When I first immigrated to the US
(from the Netherlands) we used to come to Bend for vaca-
tion. My sister moved here. My husband and I visited and
decided to move here for the quality of life - smaller town,
friendly people, less traffic and most importantly the na-
ture/outdoor activities.
Q: What is your
favorite way to
stay fit and
healthy?
Q: How would you best describe your Medical practice?
A: My diet is most-
ly nutrient dense,
non-processed, organic foods. I love to stay active, I’ve
found interval training and yoga are a great combination. I
do a mix of outdoor activities like biking, swimming, skiing.
I've learned over exercising is as bad as under-exercising so
I try to stay balanced and listen to my body.
A: I practice evidence based integrative/functional medicine
along with conventional medicine. My goal is to get to the
root cause of illness by looking at all systems of the body,
to treat with the least toxic, most effective modality. These
modalities may include herbs, nutritional supplements, life-
style, environmental changes or prescriptions. I have a spe-
cial interest and training in dermatology, hormone replace-
ment therapy, women's health and gastrointestinal disor-
ders.
Q: What is your favorite local food?
A: Kababa and Wild Rose Thai
My background brings a wide range of training from one of
the top full-spectrum family medicine residencies (UCSF/
Sutter) and a dermatology fellowship (in clinical research,
patient care treating severe psoriasis, eczema, photothera-
py-responsive disorders) and extensive training in integra-
tive medicine through conferences over past 12 years. Annemieke Austin M.D. practices evidence based integra-
Q: What attracted you to becoming a Doctor? toxic, most effective modality.
A: Besides wanting to help people suffering as I did, I am
fascinated by science. As a child I dealt with significant
health issues. My journey to science and medicine occurred
as I looked for ways to improve my own health. As a teen-
ager, I stumbled upon the book "Mental and Elemental
Nutrients" by Carl Pfieffer, it opened an entirely new world,
how nutrition can affect brain function and it set me on a
path to becoming a physician. These modalities may include herbs, nutritional supple-
tive/functional medicine along with conventional medicine.

Q: We’ve heard from your patients that you are a wonder-
ful "Listener", what role does listening play in treating

A: Most diagnoses in medicine can be made by listening to
the patient’s story. I take my patients concerns very seri-
ously, the first step is hearing what they are saying. My
own health challenges in life have provided a level of empa-
thy. I can remember feeling ill and hoping a physician
