2014 Winners - Sacred Heart Secondary School Clonakilty

Students in previous years have gained greatly from participation in this competition by having an opportunity to develop lifelong skills in communication , presentation and confidence , working with some of Ireland ’ s most dynamic food companies . Students gain an insight into the production of Certified Irish Angus Beef from the rearing of live animals right through to providing the end consumer with what is widely accepted as the very finest beef . An insight is also gained by the students into the complexities of how some of Ireland ’ s best retailers deliver a superior product to Irish consumers . This level of understanding of a hugely complex food business has been invaluable to their study and their future careers .

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

Transition years will be asked to make an initial application by way of a 3-minute video which explains and develops the following :
• Introduction of the students and the school
• Role of Ag Science within the school
• Understanding of the three main sponsors of the competition
• Plans for the promotion of the Certified Irish Angus Beef brand if successful in winning calves .
From the video , a shortlist of schools will be selected and will be interviewed based on the content of the video . From the interview , a core group of schools will be invited to participate in an exhibition attended by a large number of agricultural food and retail companies and state bodies who will form part of the selection of the five finalist schools .
One group will be selected as overall winner and receive an additional cash prize of € 2,000 .
