AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA

Conditions for Entry – Eligibility : Below is an overview , however , full details including eligibility requirements , overview of the PAS selection process and An Garda Síochána clearance process are available on www . garda . ie . To be eligible for selection as a Trainee , an applicant must :
• Be of good character
• Be 18 years of age but not yet 35 years of age on midnight of the closing date of the competition .
• ( a ) Be a national of a European Union Member State ,
Garda Trainee :
An Garda Síochána was formed in February 1922 . Garda Headquarters is based in the Phoenix Park , Dublin 8 . The general direction and control of An Garda Síochána is the responsibility of the Garda Commissioner who is appointed by the Government .
Policing is an exciting job with unique demands . It is a challenging and exciting role and one which continually presents new and interesting experiences .
Modern policing entails much more than crime fighting . Reducing the fear of crime and working in partnership with communities are the keys to making a positive difference and improving quality of life for all citizens .
As a member of An Garda Síochána , you will operate on the front line , supporting victims and witnesses , providing reassurance and instilling confidence . You will also be in a position to make a proactive contribution to your area , building relationships and trust within the community .
Your training will provide you with all the tools you need to carry out the necessary functions and tasks expected for policing an increasingly diverse society . Policing is intrinsically rewarding but you also receive a competitive salary with attractive allowances .
To reach trainee stage however you must go through a rigorous selection procedure , designed to test whether you have the qualities necessary to become a successful member of An Garda Síochána .
After training the career presents opportunities to work in a wide variety of fields including Community Policing , Traffic Control and Regulation , Public Order , Detective Duties , Organised Crime Investigation , Fraud and Drugs Offences .
or ( b ) Be a national of a European Economic Area State or the Swiss Confederation ; or ( c ) Be a Refugee under the Refugee Act , 1996 ; or ( d ) Have had a period of one year ’ s continuous residence in the State on the closing date of the advertisement for the competition for the vacancy to which the admission relates , and during the eight years immediately preceding that period , has had a total residence in the State amounting to four years ;
( e ) Has been granted subsidiary protection , or is a family member of such a person , in compliance with the Admissions and Appointments Regulations 2013 .
• Have by the closing date : ( a ) obtained an Irish Leaving Certificate with a grade
D3 minimum in five subjects at Ordinary Level *, or ( b ) hold a Level 5 Certificate ( Major award ) on the
National Framework of Qualifications ( NFQ ), or ( c ) hold a recognised qualification ( at level 5 or greater ), deemed comparable to the above in

terms of both level and volume of learning as determined by Quality and Qualifications Ireland ( QQI )
AND
( d ) Must have a proven proficiency in two languages ; one of which must be Irish or English . Such competency may be proven by achieving the relevant grades in an Irish Leaving Certificate or for English or Irish through such assessments as set out by the Public Appointments Service .
* Subjects taken at Foundation Level Leaving Certificate are not considered equivalent for entry to this competition .
In certain cases a Pass in the Applied Leaving Certificate may be deemed equivalent to an Ordinary Leaving Certificate . In addition , applicants must also have proven proficiency in two languages .
There is no requirement to be of a specific height as all applicants must undergo a Physical Competence Test ( PCT ).
Garda Reserve : The Garda Reserve is a voluntary , unpaid body drawn from the community whose purpose is to assist the full time force in various policing duties . They perform policing duties as determined by the Commissioner , accompanied by full time Garda . Garda Reserves carry out various duties which include : Community Engagement & Public Safety – Community Policing , Foot Patrol , Station duty , Communications room duty / CCTV , Duty at major events . Confronting Crime – Static security duty , giving evidence in court , Serving Summonses Roads Policing – Road Traffic checkpoint duties , Assisting at major emergencies .
