Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. The life expectancy of a person with ALS is 2 to 5 years. As the disease progresses, it takes away a person's ability to walk, dress, write, speak, swallow and breathe. The disease is always fatal. Approximately 6000 people are diagnoses with ALS in the United States each year, that's 15 new cases a day!
