Personal Development Motivations:
What are your personal development motivations? Having the opportunity to compete as a college
athlete is a 4-5 year investment in your future success. You will learn about teamwork, leadership and
overcoming adversity. Do the programs in which you are interested provide you with an opportunity to
be impacted outside of the playing field? It has been said that you are a product of the 5 people you
spend the most time with and does your program of interest seem like a place that will challenge you
and mold you into a better person? At the University of Charleston, we actively look for student-
athletes who will challenge us to be better coaches and people; likewise, we expect our student-athletes
to seek to be impacted through the opportunities that we can provide them.
In closing, when we are recruiting we don’t identify the best player on the field then find a way to make
him fit; we identify athletes above a threshold of ability to help us win and then pass them through the
“fit filter,” based on our organizational values. We refuse to compromise our values to win. As a
student-athlete in the recruiting process, identify and stick to your values and motivations. Best of luck!
