I wish I could say the idea for a literary magazine came in this bright flash of brilliance and thus spawned the magazine, fully grown no doubt, from my thoughts and was an instant success.

but I can't. It started with several weeks of feverish searching the internet for things to read and pictures to look at done by people like me. Someone who had a lot of time on their hands, and wanted to know what the rest of the world was working on, and what it looked like.

That's it. Curiosity was the impetus. And here is the result. It's been a labour of love; collecting bits of stories and beautiful photos to look at. I have to admit being surrounded by these works has inspired me in a way I haven't been inspired for a long time, which I suspect has been the jewel I've been searching for all this time.

Featured in this quarter's issue features a lot of what I've gleaned from my late night searches. A short story called Shore Leave by Joel Thomas Hynes opens the magazine, along with several of his photos. His short, crisp prose can be found onlong so many avenues today. He's a musician, a photographer, an actor as well as a writer (amongst other things) and someone anyone worth their salt should have had their eye on the past few years when he exploded onto the Canadian writing scene in 2005 with the much hailed novel Down to the Dirt.

Also appearing in this issue are photographs by Justin Craigen. These photos often feel eerie and haunting. Justin uses almost exclusively film when out and about gathering these images. His iphone and other equipment always second choices.

So, welcome to the first issue of Behind the Front door: a Literary & Arts magazine. One can contact the magazine at [email protected] and we will do our best to answer questions.

I hope you enjoy this,
