Safety at Gamsberg mine with NMC Civils
The South African Government has taken a strong stance on Mining Safety and has expressed their ongoing commitment to the matter . As contractors working on the Gamsberg mining site at Aggeneys NMC Civils , a division of the NMC Construction Group , needed to familiarise themselves with the Mining Health and Safety Act in addition to the Occupational Health and Safety Act under which they operate .
The transition to ensure compliance to the Mining Health and Safety Act was fairly smooth as the civils SHEQ team were well prepared , having certification in ISO 14001 , 9001 and OHSAS 18001 and all internal policies and procedures in place .
Preservation of the environment is vital
Environmental conservation is a high priority on this project . Preservation of the environment forms an important part of the day to day operations on site and as a result a local safety officer was appointed . Safety Officer , Ryan Ruiters , is familiar with the area and is able to effectively manage the environmental and safety aspects of the project .
