June | July 2016 : Beating Drum Page 2 Norwood Primary Mobile Library The NMC Western Cape Building, Civils, Plant and Head Office divisions along with Mokwena Surfacing and Llevell Laser Floors shared in giving the gift of reading by donating a mobile library to the learners of Norwood Central Primary School in Elsies River. The project came together wonderfully with NAMIBIA employees either donating, sorting and covering books or assisting in sprucing up the container with a much needed coat of paint and colourful mural. With the kind assistance of a few of our partners we handed over a fully kitted mobile library with the addition of more than 600 new books to the school on Mandela Day. Employees further hosted reading groups on the day. Alexandra Hospice Spring Cleaning Gauteng employees continued their support of the Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre. The hospice provides care for chronic and terminally ill patients in Alexandra and surrounding areas. The team donated medical supplies to the value of R10 000 as well as two bakkie loads of food collected amongst employees to stock up the facility’s pantry shelves. On Mandela Day the team delivered all the goods and spent some time cleaning the facility (they did everything from scrubbing floors to ironing patients’ clothing) and chatting to patients. FHL Greenbushes Soup Kitchen The Port Elizabeth team, together with Woolworths supported Faith, Hope and Love Ministries with their feeding scheme in the poverty stricken Greenbushes community. They collected basic supplies and made up little hampers to hand out to the elderly, whilst Woolworths took care of the children. The team was moved by the dire need of the Greenbushes community and have committed to continue their support with the donation of a container to house a permanent soup kitchen in the area. Nelson Mandela gave so much of himself to our country and the world. Let us continue where he left off and not grow weary of doing good. In the words of Madiba “it's in your hands now”. A culture of giving beyond Mandela Day In the spirit of giving NMC Construction Namibia harnessed the support of Round Table Namibia, an organisation assisting those in need with various donations, to aid those closer to home. Namibia’s involvement on the Lazaret and Merensky Towers projects has opened up numerous local employment opportunities, yet the life circumstances of unskilled contract labour remain difficult with workers struggling to sustain their family's basic needs during this period of drought the country is experiencing. Round Table’s donation of 100 blankets will bring relief during the dry cold Namibian winter.
