Owen Middle School
Effective learning means putting knowledge into practice . That ’ s why Owen Middle students put their heads together each Spring to assemble a race-ready vehicle and compete in the North Carolina Gravity Games . The team starts with a kit , modifies the cablebased steering and braking systems , customizes their vehicle ’ s appearance , and prepares for an exciting down-hill race in downtown Lenoir . With tools in hand , students develop teamwork and problem solving skills , as well as apply math and physics .
In recent years , materials have been provided via grants from either the NC Science Festival or the BCS Foundation . In the school ’ s 4th year competing , the team includes Charlie Elder , Jonnie Laura , Landon Brown , Hunter Wonson , Dennis Luchinin , Natasha Luchinina , and Samara McKnight .
