Roberson High School Not a Team, But a Family T he T.C. Roberson Rams swimming and diving team trains with the motto of “Not a team, but a family.” Long hours of training each week coupled with routine spaghetti dinners creates a family-like bond for teammates- a necessary ingredient for a successful season. With excellent diving and swimming performances, the team swept the MAC Conference this year. Months of hard work and grueling pool sets paid off in early February as the team traveled to Regionals and State to compete against the best swimmers in North Carolina. “Our athletes showed that they are among the best in our state,” said Assistant Coach Katherine Grainger, who works alongside Head Coach Jim Cottam. “Their success is proof that hard work and dedication in the pool truly pay off.” The team’s accomplishments this season are extensive. This year, the diving team had three divers compete at the 4A Western Regional dive meet. At the 4A Western Regional swim meet, the girls placed 8 th overall with Camille Long making the podium for 3 rd place in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. Anna Newman joined the podium with a strong 3 rd place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. The boys team also swam impressively, taking 6 th place overall. At the 4A State meet, the Ram’s top swimmers proudly represented WNC, setting an unprecedented 10 school records in the process. “It has been a very rewarding season,” concluded Grainger. “Coach Cottam and I are extremely proud of all that this team has accomplished.” 7
