Resplendent

California

Outdoor concerts, the finest foods, the best wines, great people, make this an adventure of a lifetime that I believe should be included on everyone’s bucket list.

The coastal highway that you see in movies with the winding, twisting, roads, and breathtaking ambiance of life’s natural landscapes of the ocean waves smashing against the jagged mountains with no worries or concerns, offer you an escape that would be difficult to duplicate. It’s much like the feeling of being in love.

There are just countless aspects of this marvelous state. Too many to mention here. I could go on and on about Lake Tahoe and the beauty of that area alone. But, one thing that may have been the most astounding thing I had ever seen before, other than myself, undergoing a complete metamorphosis at puberty, were the elephant seals.

THE SANDY

BEACHES

At the sandy beaches of the rocky Point Reyes, you will find a few colonies of Northern elephant seals, which are the largest pinnipeds in the northern hemisphere. You hear the varied sounds they make from their floppy proboscis, as well as the sound of males challenging each other in their pursuit of dominance, and the females and pups playing. What’s especially interesting is watching them toss sand upon their backs to cool off. Their movement is sometimes more swift than you would imagine an up to 5,000 pound enormous body would be able to do. Then they lay on top of each other as they adjust themselves for peaceful rest. In knowing that these mammals make two long distance migrations in a year, traveling up to 21,000 miles, I definitely appreciated the opportunity of reveling in their presence.
