And the woman? Is she anyone?

"Not necessarily - sometimes, possibly unconsciously, but not deliberately... The importance is the dynamic of the relationship, the intangible communication, or at least an understanding that there is a breach here, that cannot be mended or undone: the clock cannot be turned back. Time has run its course. That is what is important."

This is an insight worth having because it is very much apparent in "Elegy for Lost Illusions", in which a man and a woman in evening dress stand before a swimming pool and a rising sun - and amidst all the ambiguity of their glamorous situation seem to acknowledge in silence and resignation, that something has ended. The feeling of loss refers to more than the relationship itself - it extends to a broader sense of life, its ambitions and hopeful striving that may bring glamour and affluence but ultimately fail their adherents. The clean lines, the barren landscape and the empty pool divide the protagonists, suggesting that there is an understanding of this and a sad resignation to the consequences of their efforts: the painting is a moment of recognition.
