What made you decide to play bass?
I fell in love with playing bass immediately,
and was able to spend hours playing with no
concept of time. There never seems be enough
time nowadays though.
How/Where did you learn to play?
I started playing during my second year at
UC Berkeley. I was studying to be become a
journalist. I just started playing bass and after
some time, I became a bass player.
Who are your musical inspirations, both
male and female?
So many, too many to name... from Miles
Davis, Prince, MeShell, Rage Against the
Machine, Coltrane, Victor Wooten, Marcus
Miller, P-Funk, James Brown, The Roots,
Prince, Lenny Kravitz, The Who, Outkast.... the
list goes on and on.
In an industry dominated by male
musicians, do you find that this hinders
or helps your opportunities?
I find that I have to create opportunities, and
be prepared when unexpected opportunities
arise (those are always fun!). I’m a bass player.
I’m a musician. I don’t preface those things
with ‘female’. I bring something unique to the
instrument.. if you believe it’s because I’m
