Bass Musician Magazine - SPECIAL August 2014 Female Bassist Issue | Page 170
So I make sure I keep in as good a physical shape as possible,
including cardio and weights. I also use a wheel if I have to travel
long distances. You can also find cases to carry a bass on your
back. I’ve done that… just be careful through doorways!!
What do you wish someone had told you when you were
first getting started?
That I was going to have to fly with my bass someday on a plane.
Seriously, I wish I had stayed with the piano at age 8; I think piano
knowledge is a really powerful tool, which can open doors for years.
Any advice for other females interested in getting started
on the bass?
Listen mindfully to all kinds of music, learn to play all kinds of
music, learn both electric and upright. And ‘leave your gender
at the door’, just bring the parts that make you special into your
music.
What can we look forward to from you in the coming year?
I just released an all-vocal Americana/indie pop CD with my band,
Missy Raines & The New Hip, called “New Frontier” on Compass
Records in the fall 2013 (Click to listen here), and I’m writing the
next CD as we speak; look for it in 2015.
