Bass Digest: Being such an accomplished angler already, where to from here for you? What are your aspirations & goals for the future?

Freddie Steyn: I still need a way to go to say I am accomplished. My immediate goal was achieved by making the WCBAA National side to fish Inanda Dam in August. Apart from that my next goal is to make the Protea side. On the local front, I would like to win a regional this year and maybe take top honours in the 2014/2015 season.

Bass Digest: W“What happens on tour stays on tour” but at Bass Digest we like to tell all. What is your funniest moment you can recall on tour?

Freddie Steyn: I fished a regional during April at Kwaggaskloof dam near Worcester. It was one of those days that things did not go as planned. The first 4 bass either snapped off or jumped loose on the retrieve.

I was fishing a point called the clubhouse and hooked onto a decent size bass and it was giving me horns. I was very careful with the bass as I needed to get my bag going and I had it in the net.

As I lifted the net out of the water the bass unexpectedly jumped throwing the hook and landing the side of my boat. It then lethargically plopped into the water. The bass very slowly to swim away, so I thought I would try my luck and stab the net under the bass to try and land it. This desperate attempt at a “reaching stab” landed me face down in the water with my rod still in hand. Luckily I was able to save my rod and sunglasses, but the bass escaped leaving me drenched from head to toe.

The funny side of this is that my actions would probably have gone unnoticed if it weren’t for this entire scene unraveling in front of two other regional anglers who were having a proper chuckle at me.

Bass Digest: What advice do you have for young aspiring bass anglers that hope to achieve the level of fishing you have?

Freddie Steyn: Bass fishing doesn't need to be an expensive sport. To be a good Bass Angler is not about having the best gear but understanding how bass live, eat and breed. Start skilling up on your local water patterns and you will be ahead of the pack by a long shot.

Bass Digest: Freddie, thank you for your time and we look forward to keeping track of your future basing achievements.

Freddie Steyn: Thanks! And good luck with Bass Digest.
