Basic Life Support - Australia & New Zealand Infant CPR Criteria (0-1 year) INFANT CPR CRITERIA 1. Recognises the need for prompt intervention 2. Completes a safety assessment 3. Checks response - shout or tap gently DO NOT SHAKE 4. Check for signs of normal breathing - should not take longer than 10 seconds 5. Ensures assistance is called for or send for help 6. Places infant on firm surface 7. Checks and opens the airway (supine position, avoiding excessive neck extension) 8. Deliver 5 rescue breaths 9. Locates correct hand position below the imaginary line between the nipples – uses 2 fingers of one hand 10. Commences 30 compressions 11. Correct chest compression depth (1/3 chest depth, approx. 4cm) 12. Demonstrates ‘encircled hand technique’ for babies/small infants 13. Correct rate - 100 compressions per minute 14. After 30 compressions commences 2 ventilations, each over 1 second 15. Does not interrupt CPR to check for circulation unless victim responds PASS FAIL (Based on NZRC, 2011) Please note: the compression - ventilation rate of 30/2 is based on the BLS (first responder) guideline and will be 15/2 in a hospital or other clinical environment.
