Statistically returning the conferences second best pitcher and three top 16 hitters will only help the Wolves. Four other position players and two other pitchers with starting experience are back for WOU as well. Western Oregon ended the 2014 season as the highest rated fielding team, converting 96.7 percent of their plays in the field. With three starting infielders and two outfielders back, the Wolves project to be just as strong defensively. The 2014 regular season champions start off with another tough schedule to begin the year, playing the second-ranked team in the West Region in UC San Diego before playing coach Kellen Walker’s alma mater in Point Loma Nazarene. WOU then plays Cal State Monterey Bay and NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State before opening conference play against the team it eliminated from the tournament a year ago in Saint Martin’s. After seeming all but out of the playoff picture towards the end of the regular season, the Saints won eight of their final 10 games to edge out Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene for the final spot in the tournament. The Saints fell by two runs in their first two tournament games to finish in third. SMU didn’t have a dominant side of the ball in 2014, ranking fourth in team batting average and ERA. Although in the eight wins at the end of the regular season, the Saints were averaging almost eight runs a game while allowing hardly four.
