Barnacle Bill Magazine January 2016 | Page 12

At Barnacle Bill, we're always interested to hear about the commercial application of sail and low tech designs considered obsolete by many. Much of this focus is, naturally on companies that use sail and oar for commercial transport. Sail was much used up until WW2, the last generation of great sailing ships being the 'Windjammers', huge four or five masted sailing vessels with small crews, motor winch operated sails and steel rigging these goliaths delivered low margin large volume produce like gypsum, cement and guano (poo!). We are always keen to hear from companies making a commercial success of using sail and New Dawn Traders are no exception. They ship premium fair trade and rum from the Caribbean to Cornwall on the Tres Hombres, an engine-less brigantine owned by www.fairtransport.nl. Likely hands can join Tres Hombres for her round trips from Europe to the Caribbean. Their philosophy is fairtrade by sail so unfortunately, if you live outside of the UK, they'll only deliver by sail so if you have any friends doing a transatlantic, now's the time to nobble them! But don't worry, if you just have your bottle delivered to Barnacle Bill Magazine, we'll be happy to tell you what it tastes like!

Barnacle Bill says:

"Old Salts preferNew Dawn 18 year old Rum!"

New Dawn Traders are an independent trading company based in the South West of England. We currently sell fine Caribbean RUM and CHOCOLATE made from sail-shipped cargo, brought across the Atlantic by the pioneering, engine-less brigantine, Tres Hombres. On arrival, these delicacies are transformed by local artisans into New Dawn products. Our exotic treasures are chosen for their exceptional taste and ethical goodness from soil to serving, where the entire supply chain is our adventure.

We also organise a Sail Cargo Festival in Cornwall each year to celebrate these cargo carrying sailing vessels. In time we will add our own ship to the fleet.

45 days at sea under sail-power

The beans in this bar were grown with care in the tropical hills of the Dominican Republic. After 45 days at sea, propelled by the trade winds alone, the beans met their alchemist, Chocolarder of Cornwall, master chocolatier. With an obsessive attention to detail from roasting, maturing and hand-tempering, these beans have been crafted into an exceptional dark chocolate without the usual bitterness.
