You’ll see quite a lot of yawl rigged boats in Barnacle Bill
Magazine. However, like many old seamanship skills, knowing how to sail a yawl is becoming forgotten as the predominance of Bermudan sloops prevails both in boat design and
in training.
The boat we are sailing has a single mainsail (referred to as
a fores’l in the above example) however, the rules for sailing
a boat with a mizzen, mainsail and jib are similar. The same
also applies to different sail types. Yawl rig is common on lug
rigged boats, but often as a sprits’l and is pretty common
on junk rigged boats. Mizzens have been added to boats to
make them easier to handle in certain circumstances. Clint
Chase designed a yawl rig that works very well with Michael
Storer’s well regarded Goat Island Skiff. Clint says:
“I added the mizzen to the GIS because I wanted a boat for
myself that would be easier to singlehand on longer excursions and for use in sail-and-oar events such as the Small
Reach Regatta, the Texas 200, and other RAID events like the
Shipyard School Raid and Sail Caledonia. Many, many of the
boats you see in these events have a mizzen.”
Mizzens have also been fitted to Storer’s OzGoose. Both
these boats perform well with a mizzen and it is easy to add
as with both these boats, the centre of effort doesn’t change
when a mizzen is applied, this means that the locaiton of
mast and daggerboard do not have to be adjusted. However,
when adding a mizzen to a boat the centre of effort typically
does change so it is important you calculate it BEFORE you
start to check that the conversion is feasible.
