The classic
Reminiscences of a
Stock Operator – one of
John’s favourite books.
Do you follow anyone’s blogs or Tweets, or do you blog or
Tweet yourself?
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never tweeted, and I have a fairly full
day without following tweets and blogs.
What personal technology do you use?
I have a BlackBerry and an iPhone. I use my iPhone, with a South
African SIM card, as a phone. The BlackBerry is for e-mail and other
work communications.
Which sport and leisure activities do you enjoy?
I used to run. I’m trying to get back into it but it’s not so easy these
days. I used to play rugby at university and I enjoy watching it.
I enjoy watching sport generally. And I play golf. I’m not too good
around the greens and I’m a terrible putter, but I can pass myself off
as a golfer. And I also read a lot.
What do you read?
I enjoy reading biographies and I read a lot of crime stories. I’ve just
finished one by Jo Nesbo, and I’m now reading a historical novel
by Hilary Mandel.
Any recent business books or presentations you’d recommend
to colleagues?
One of my favourite books that I reread every so often is
Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, written in the 1920s by Edwin
Lefevre. It’s based on the career of a very well-known trader of that
time, Jesse Livermore. It’s fascinating to read if you’re interested
in markets.
