Dominic Thorn has been awarded the AMOS Melbourne Centre
Regional Award for 2018.
Kimberley Reid, the Melbourne Centre Representative,
presented Dominic his Certificate and Award at a presentation
at Melbourne University on Tuesday 12th February 2019.
Dominic is a graduating Master of Science (coursework) student
who completed his thesis in Meteorology at the University of
Melbourne in 2018, entitled “Climate and weather influences on
Antarctic sea ice”.
His thesis involved sophisticated data analysis techniques to
show that large-scale climate variations can influence Antarctic
sea ice in complex ways.
A paper to be submitted to Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) is
in preparation.

SA Student Essay Award

SA Regional Centre Chair
Nathan Teder of Flinders University was awarded the student
essay prize by the South Australian branch of AMOS. Essays were
sought on any topic of climate, atmospheric or oceanographic
science. Nathan (pictured right) was presented his prize at the
Annual General Meeting held in early December 2018.
Nathan Teder is a Master of Science student at Flinders University.
Under the supervision of oceanographer A/Prof Jochen Kaempf,
he is currently exploring possible upwelling processes in the far
western Great Australian Bight that could explain the seasonal
appearance of dozens of Orca pods near the Bremer Canyon.
