A successful story of science and technology of Big Data
applied to the agriculture business is ‘The Yield’. This agricultural
technology company takes microclimate sensing data 24/7,
such as soil moisture, leaf wetness, light, wind and rain, and
combines it with predictive modelling, data analytics and
AI to create a 7-day weather forecast for a farmer’s specific
microclimate. Information is sent to farmers via a mobile app, so
they can determine how, when and where best to plant, irrigate,
protect, feed and harvest their crops. The Yield measures and
predicts super-localised growing conditions and helps farmers
to make better decisions, via managing business and planning
according to local weather conditions.
These showcases are excellent examples of successful
partnerships between those who have great ideas and those
who have the infrastructure to translate and commercialise
them. The STA Science Meets Business was a great opportunity
to understand the demand for new knowledge and technology
around Big Data, and stimulate the connections with innovators
and business across Australia.
