BAJAN SUN Bajan Sun Magazine JULY 2014 She believes the main issues are that we tend to sweep things under the rug and never speak out, so she decided it was necessary for her to find a way to highlight this epidemic and came up with a project which she entitled “Be a Voice of Hope -SPEAK OUT!”; she is using the Miss Humanity Pageant as her foundation to promote her fight against Domestic Abuse. The Campaign was conceptualized with the aim to inspire young men and women to stand up and speak out against Domestic Violence. Her mission is to sensitize mainly the younger generation about the different forms of abuse and provide a helping hand for persons that may want to assist a family member or friend that may be in an abusive relationship. This project intends to take various stages with first launching with a poster campaign that will be posted in various schools reminding them to speak out as well as awareness through social media. There is hope that permission will be grant to visit various summer camps around Barbados and provide workshops that sensitize persons on the issue of Domestic Abuse. By depicting abuse using various mechanisms such as theatre and games, training our youth on how to be able to identify the signs of domestic abuse as well as how to conduct themselves when faced with these signs and finally to encourage persons to share their experiences and stories in the aim of letting victims know that there is hope and what are their options if and when they need it, it is hoped the epidemic can be stemmed. In conclusion of phase one, a march is planned to bring awareness to the masses. This march will be done by the youth of the nation and will showcase dance, music and participants will be encouraged to Speak Out on Domestic Abuse on the placards they will carry. Pamphlets will also be distributed to persons along the route.
