When I think of a badass , I think of a strong , caring , intelligent woman who can do it all . She ’ s a loving wife , mother , daughter , and friend . She ’ s a motivated entrepreneur or valued employee . She has a variety of hobbies and interests , some of which make no sense to other people and might even seem contradictory to one another . But she doesn ’ t care because she is who she is and she likes what she likes . She exudes confidence in many aspects of her life .

But often times , that confidence falls short she sets foot in the gym . Maybe she hasn ’ t even made it so far as to put a foot in the gym because she ’ s insecure and overwhelmed . As a long-time personal trainer and nutrition coach , I see it all the time : powerful , confident women in the outside world who have no idea what to do for workouts and who feel out of place trying to figure it out alone .
Interestingly , I have had the exact opposite experience : my confidence developed in the gym and eventually grew beyond those four walls and into other aspects of my life . I often fall back on lessons learned in the gym when I ’ m feeling anxious or uncertain about something in my professional or personal life . There are so , so many parallels between feeling strong and powerful in the gym and feeling that way outside of it , too .
Here are 5 tips to become a badass in the gym :
1 . No one is judging you and expecting you to fail or do something stupid . I hear it all the time - clients tell me they don ’ t want to go to the gym because they ’ re afraid everyone will be looking at and judging them . Maybe that ’ s human narcissism but in my experience , it couldn ’ t be further from the truth . Fortunately , most other people are also self-involved , so they ’ re much more concerned about what they ’ re doing to care about you looking like a deer in headlights trying to figure out which body part goes where and which button means Start . Hold your head up high & walk in there like you were born in a gym ( not literally , gross ).
2 . You can learn a lot from people watching . In my experience , it ’ s the people who put their heads down and go to work from whom you can learn the most . They ’ re focused , goal-oriented , and usually know a thing or two about what they ’ re doing . Usually the people who go in there seemingly just for social hour are more than willing to give you their opinions about what you should be doing but if you don ’ t see them following their own advice , take it with a grain of salt .
3 . Don ’ t be afraid of weight
