Rather it is something that has
been ingrained in us since we
were small children. Watching
my son being told he can not
wear a skirt because it’s a “girls”
thing made me realize it is no
wonder we have no idea what we
want to do or how to go after it.
We have been told from the time
we were conscious what and who
we are allowed to do and be. And
far worse than being told we are
wrong, it was often packaged
with the best of intentions.
And so Creative Mermaids was
born.
I wanted to give what I so des-
perately needed: a place for cre-
atives to dive deep and start un-
covering what is blocking them.
To find out what they really want
and to explore it in a safe space.
I like to think of it as getting to
channel your inner Anais Ninn.
Because that woman knew how
to dive deep and scratch past the
crap that got in her way. And she
knew how to roll with it because
in her words “perfection is static
and I am in full motion.”
And so now I make the time to
write, to get the journals ready,
to make mistakes and learn from
them as I go in my business. No
more waiting until it is ready
before turning up or making the
time.
About the Author
Sherrie McCarthy is chief mermaid at Creative Mermaids
and writer at booksboatsandbabes.com. Her lifelong
obsession with journaling made her realize that as much
as she loves writing what she really wants is to help
people heal through writing and journaling. And so she
created the Creative Mermaids. Like mermaids, this is
not surface level stuff. Creative Mermaids are not afraid
of the depths. We dive deep here.

Am I or my fledgling business
perfect? Hell no. But I am in full
motion. And that feels so much
better than lying still.
