McWilliams wins LGA Mid-Am
Robby McWilliams of
Benton fired a four-under par
68 on Sunday at Southern
Trace Country Club in
Shreveport to win the 2016
Louisiana Golf Association
Mid-Amateur Championship
by four shots over Patrick
Christovich of New Orleans.
McWilliams shot 68 in all
three rounds of competition
to finish at 12-under par 204
for the Championship. This
victory was especially sweet for
McWilliams, who has finished
runner-up in the LGA MidAmateur Championship four
times previously. McWilliams
was solid all week, in every
aspect of his game, and he
played incredible golf down
the stretch, shooting a back
nine 33 in Sunday’s final
round.
McWilliams made
16 birdies, 34 pars, and
only 4 bogeys through 54
holes to claim his first LGA
Championship.
McWilliams started his
final round tied for the lead
with Buck Williams of New
24
Orleans and Derek Busby of
Ruston at 8-under par, and the
final group teed off at 10:48
AM. McWilliams made three
consecutive pars to start his
round, then he made his first
birdie of the day at the par 3
4th hole. After another par on
#5, McWilliams showcased
his iron game again by hitting
his tee shot close on the par 3
6th hole. He made the birdie
putt and moved to two-under
par for the day. He stumbled
at the par 4 7th hole, the
second most difficult hole
of the championship, and
made a bogey 5. After two
consecutive pars, McWilliams
made the turn at one-under
par 35.
The back nine on Sunday
was where McWilliams made
his charge to secure the
Championship.
He made
three consecutive birdies
on the first three par 4s
(10,11,&12) and then a par at
the par 3 13th. McWilliams
followed that up with another
birdie at the par 5 14th. His
lone bogey on the back 9 came
on the par 4 15th hole, and he
closed out his round with three
consecutive pars, bringing
his total to three-under par
33 for the back 9, and 68 for
the round. McWilliams’s 204
