51st LWGA Junior Girls Championship By Mary Capouch Brooke Tyree captured the LWGA Junior Girls title this week at Alexandria Country Club. Tyree, a junior at Sulphur High, also earned medalist honors with a round of 71 on Wednesday, July 13, and then fired a 74 Thursday to win the Championship. Runner-up honors were shared by defending champion Abbey Daniel (72-78), Covington Archbishop Hannan sophomore, and current Amateur Champion Mary Chauvin (73-77), a senior at Hammond High. Brooke Duzan, Sulphur High senior, won the first flight (82-75). Tying for first in the second flight were Carly Whittington, 14, a ninth grader at Lacassine High in Kinder and also Mckenzie Leduff, 14, a freshman at St. Louis Catholic in Lake Charles. Both players shot 88-86. The winner of the Youth Division was 12-year-old Liza Lapeyre (93-92), New Orleans, a seventh grader at Isadore Newman School. Announced at the Players’ Dinner, were the second recipients and co-winners of the $1,000 scholarship scholarship: seniors Madeline Gordon, Kenner, who will be a freshman at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Savannah Ennis, Covington, who will enter Spring Hill College in Mobile.
