May 18th marked National Golf Day in the United States . The day was created nine years ago by a coalition of leading golf organizations – the USGA , PGA , LPGA and Golf Course Superintendents Association of America ( GCSAA ). The purpose was to highlight golf ’ s impact on the country .
You might have seen other golf organizations and our social media posts about the impact golf has on our environment , economy and the health benefits of playing . There is a long list of interesting facts and figures compiled from the coalition ’ s work that touches on the game that both frustrates us and gives us joy . This movement by these leading organizations in the United States brings great attention to our lawmakers that golf has a great impact on all of us .
Golf provides exercise and activity , whether you are walking or riding , in addition to keeping us thinking . According to WEAREGOLF . ORG , “ Walking 18 holes is equal to a 3.5 mile run or a 5 mile walk . It burns up to 2,000 calories and over 10,000 steps are taken during an 18- hole round .”
Even if you choose not to walk or cannot physically walk nine ( 9 ) or 18 holes , you will still receive some of these health benefits by taking a cart when the golf course is mandating cart path only due to wet conditions . These factoids , in a world that has become very health conscious , highlight that golf gives you some of the same benefits as going to the gym . That said , we need to look deeper into what makes golf so important to us and our nation .
For individuals employed within the golf industry , it would seem obvious why we have chosen this career ; we obviously must love the game . There is also an obvious truth to that assessment , but we think you might be a bit surprised to find out how some golf administrators found their careers in golf .

Susan Smiley , director of membership and communications with the Golf Association of Michigan touched on how it was a bond shared between father and daughter . “ Very honestly , it was my dad who was very passionate about golf and the biggest Arnold Palmer fan ever ,” she said . “ When I was really little , my dad and I would hit golf whiffle balls in the back yard . We lived near a little par 3 , 9-hole course that also had a driving range and putt-putt , and my dad used to take me there all the time . It was also close enough that kids in the neighborhood could ride their bikes there . Golf was just a fun thing to do for the kids in my neighborhood – affordable and accessible – and also it was how I bonded with my dad . I guess I am saying that where I grew up , golf was not some elitist thing , it was a fun thing !”
