Lake Charles CC takes LGA team championship
Lake Charles Country Club can officially be
declared the golf club with the best golfers in the
state of Louisiana after taking the LGA Club Team
Championship title at Money Hill Golf & Country
Club in Abita Springs this weekend.
Lake Charles Country Club went wire-to-wire to
win the first LGA Club Team Championship in the
club’s prestigious 97-year history. The 6-man team of
Billy Gabbert, Robby Going, Doug Quienalty, Hank
Shaheen, Greg Sonnier, and Tyler Terry showcased
the depth and caliber of players at Lake Charles
Country Club, and they now have state bragging
rights.
Lake Charles Country Club shot a 3-over par 291
in Sunday’s individual stroke play final round, and
coupled with their 15-under par 129 in Saturday’s
4-Ball round, they finished at an impressive 12-under
par 420 to win by 4 strokes over runner-up and 2015
42
LGA Club Team Champions Oakbourne Country
Club of Lafayette.
Format of play for the LGA Club Team is as follows:
each team consists of one of the club’s professionals
and five club members or six club members. The
6-man teams compete in four-ball play on Saturday
with the two best of the three four-ball scores from
each team making up that team’s score for the day.
On Sunday, players compete in individual stroke
play with the best four of six scores comprising the
team’s score. With four counting scores on Sunday
versus only two counting scores on Saturday, it’s not
unusual for the winning team to come from far back
in the pack, making for an extremely exciting finish
on Sunday.
However, Lake Charles Country Club played their
game and did not allow any teams to leap them on the
leaderboard.
