In December/January, we talked about making realistic goals during the holiday – understanding that everyone eats ... and eats well ... during the holiday season. And now, it’s time to get real. Gym memberships are wonderful, but have you already quit going? Better yet, did you ever start? Are you already paying a bill for which you are not getting any service? The secret to working out can be summed up in one word – routine. We get caught up in a lot of ideas and fads, and the idea of traditional and basic cannot be stressed enough. After the fad goes away, everyone can safely return to the basics for results. While the fad diets and exercises may produce quick results, they often don’t last because the fad becomes boring or disappears due to others’ lack of interest. But traditional exercising in a routine will always bring results. And remember, exercise is cumulative, so if you can do 10 minutes of exercise in the morning, at midday and then in the evening, it’s just like working out for 30 minutes. We get caught up in not having enough time, but really, 10 minutes? Scott Higgs, MPT, Physical Therapist And the time of day for exercise doesn’t concern us as much as the lack of it. It may be more difficult to exercise in the morning if you’re not a morning person, but it also might be more difficult to fall asleep right after getting the heart pumping. It’s more about a structured time for getting healthy. When we develop the habit and routine, we get addicted to it and want the results that come from exercise. It aids in sleep, digestion, focus and even memory. Exercise will improve strength, flexibility and endurance, all attributes of a great golf game. It’s February, and it’s time to get real. The storm of the New Year’s resolutions is over, and we are all back into the routine of jobs, school and even going to the grocery store. Answer these questions and then start your routine: 1. When is the best time of day for you? 2. Can this exercise take place at home to save time? 3. What results do you want to see? Talk to your physician before you finalize your plan and share your goals with loved ones for support. Your idea may even make them get real too.
