Texas golfers dominate at Holiday Classic

LAKE CHARLES —Two Texas golfers did a twostep back to the Lone Star State with championships
following last weekend’s Mizuno/Louisiana USSSA
Holiday Classic at Gray Plantation.
Tour veteran Skylar Petroski, of Orange, Texas,
claimed another tour title by winning the Boys 1518 event. Petroski claimed the senior championship
by shooting 152, including an even par 72 on Sunday,
holding off runner-up Joseph Bourque, of Iowa, by four
strokes. Third-place finisher Colton Ryan ended the
tournament five strokes behind Petroski.
Carson Ezell claimed his first USSSA event title by
winning the Boys 12-14 event. The Houston resident
ran away from the field in the second round of the
tournament, finishing at 156. Roberto Espinosa, of
Arnaudville, finished in a distant second place by shooting
167. Payton Canter, of St. Amant, took third place with
a score of 170.
A pair of Lafayette golfers took seat atop the Boys
9-11 leaderboard. Multi-time USSSA event champion
Kale Fontenot won the junior event by shooting 79 in the
two-day, 18-hole contest. Jay Mendell took runner-up
honors back to the Hub City by finishing at 100. Ross
Anderson of Lake Charles finished in third place by
shooting 112.
Annie Thomas of Lake Charles won the Girls 15-18
event championship by shooting 179.
Two local golfers claimed the top spots in the Girls
12-14 competition. Daphney Tilton of Iowa won the
event by shooting 177. Lake Charles resident McKenzie
Leduff shot 201 to take runner-up honors.
Isabella Bradley claimed first place in the Girls 9-11
group by shooting 122 in the two-day, 18-hole event.

Lambert takes Gobbler Classic
Nolan Lambert of Gretna took advantage
of the warm, calm conditions at Beaver
Creek Golf Course to coast to victory in the
Mizuno USSSA Gobbler Classic. Lambert
shot a 150 to run away with the tournament
championship, shooting six birdies in the
process. The victory is Lambert’s first on the
USSSA tour this year.
Kenton Sinitiere of Franklin finished in
a distant second place in the senior group,
shooting a 167. Donnie LaCombe of
Gonzales took third place with a score of
172. Tanner Edney of Lafayette finished in
fourth place with a score of 192.
A trio of Shreveport golfers claimed the
top three spots in the Boys 12-14 bracket.
Hayes Hubble recorded seven birdies en
route to winning the championship by
shooting a 158. Payne Johnson finished four
strokes behind Hubble to claim runner-up
honors. Peyton Johnson, younger brother
of Payne, finished in a distant third place
by shooting a 204. Blake Marcelissen, of
Broussard, finished in fourth place with a
total of 235.
A playoff determined the winner of the
Boys 9-11 competition. Kale Fontenot and
Connor Cassano finished regulation tied at
80. Fontenot, of Lafayette, bested Cassano,
of Alexandria, on the 19th hole to take home
the division championship. Jay Mendell, of
Lafayette, finished seven strokes back to take
third place. Robert Ross Anderson, of Lake
Charles, finished in fourth place by shooting
a 93.
Cassidy Lambert of Gretna and sister
to Nolan took top honors in the Girls 1214 group by shooting a 155. Liza Lapeyre
finished in second place with a total of 183.
