Ryan dominates President’s Cup
by Ian Auzenne
[PLAQUEMINE, La.] The golfers on
the Mizuno Louisiana USSSA Junior Golf
tour dodged Mother Nature’s bullets the
weekend of Jan. 23rd. For Colton Ryan,
the weather wasn’t a deterrent.
Despite a storm dropping a significant
amount of rain on the Island Golf Course
early Sunday morning, the Mizuno USSSA
President’s Cup went on as scheduled.
Ryan, of Benton, thrived in the wet
conditions, shooting seven birdies en
route to a landslide victory in the Boys’
15-18 division. Ryan turned one of
his best performances in his USSSA
career, shooting 148 (+4) to claim the
championship.
Taylor Morton of Broussard claimed
second-place honors in the senior group,
finishing at 159. Lafayette’s Michael
Travasos took third place with 163.
Luke Haskew of Baton Rouge ran
away with the championship in the Boys
12-14 group, shooting 151 to take home
the first place trophy. Peyton Canter of St.
Amant finished in a distant second place
with a score of 168. Tanner McKenzie of
Franklinton and Canon Clark, Lafayette,
tied for third place by shooting 173.
Kale Fontenot narrowly won the Boys
9-11 event, holding off runner-up Connor
Cassano by one stroke. Fontenot shot
an 86 in the two-day, 18-hole event to
Cassano’s 87.
“With the exception of the cool, wet
conditions, play was extremely good,” said
tournament director Robert Boudreaux.
“Thanks to Daniel Preston and Chris
Burkstaller for their assistance in making
this another quality junior golf event.”
The next event on the Mizuno/
Louisiana USSSA Junior Golf Tour is the
Mizuno USSSA Mardi Gras Mambo at
Farm d’Allie Golf Club in Carencro. The
event begins on Feb. 6. The registration
deadline is Feb. 3. For more information,
