Championship is for competitors who are 25 years of
age and older, and qualifying dates are set for early July
at eight sites around the state.
As mentioned above, the 2018 LGA Championship
schedule kicks off in late April with the Club Team
Championship at Beau Chene Country Club (Oak
Course) in Mandeville. This event matches teams from
LGA Member Clubs in an exciting Ryder Cup type
format consisting of 4-Ball stroke play on Saturday and
individual stroke play on Sunday.
In mid-May, OakWing Golf Club in Alexandria will
host the State Senior Amateur Championship.
This past season was the first time that the Senior
Amateur was conducted in the Spring, and it was well
received by the Senior golfers enjoyed the comfortable
May weather. In addition to the Overall Championship,
a Super Senior Championship for individuals 65 years
of age and older will be conducted. Super Seniors will
play from a forward set of tees and compete only in their
division.
After the Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur
Qualifiers at Oakbourne, the LGA will head to East
Ridge Country Club in Shreveport for its 61st Junior
Amateur Championship. Junior Golf is thriving in
Louisiana right now, and the LGA is proud to be able
to continue to conduct Louisiana’s premier Junior Golf
Tournament in the state and provide its members an
opportunity to play Junior Golf at the highest level in
the state. Next year’s champion will certainly have a
bright future. LSU golf commit Nicholas Arcement of
Thibodaux will be back to defend his 2017 title. The
age limit for the State Junior Amateur is 18 years old
so players who have yet to turn 19 years of age by the
end of the competition will be able to compete. This
eligibility requirement was implemented in 2017 in
order to provide a competitive environment for those
who would be playing in the summer before they go to
college and elevate the level of competition. East Ridge
will be an incredible venue for this event, and there will
be a number of competitors who practice out of the
David Toms Academy in Shreveport known as 265 in
the field. East Ridge will also provide a tremendous test
for U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier (36 holes) on July
9.
The University Club of Baton Rouge will be the site
of the 2018 LGA 4-Ball Championship in mid-July. The
University Club was designed by David Toms and Jim
Lipe and is the home of LSU golf. The University Club
is one of the most well-conditioned courses in the state,
and it recently hosted the 2017 NCAA Men’s Regional
and 2016 NCAA Women’s Regional. The State 4-Ball
is always a fun and competitive event, and conducting it
44
at The University Club is sure to be a huge hit. The last
LGA Championship at The University Club was the
2011 Senior Amateur.
After the Mid-Amateur in early August, the LGA
will head to Bayou Oaks in New Orleans for the Net
Amateur Championship. The South Course opened in
May of 2017 and has garnered rave reviews. The Rees
Jones-designed track boasts some of the best greens in
the state. The course was in fantastic shape for the 2017
LGA Mid-Amateur Championship and will continue to
improve with age. It is located in City Park, 10 minutes
from downtown New Orleans.
The LGA Senior Four-Ball Championship will be
conducted in September at The Bluffs on Thompson
Creek in St. Francisville. The Arnold Palmer-designed
course offers gorgeous views and elevation changes on
the course, not common in Louisiana. Finally, the LGA
will bring the best 20 golfers East to Mississippi for the
Junior River Cup. The LGA has won the last two Junior
River Cup Matches and is looking to continue the streak.
The site and date of this event will be announced by the
Mississippi Golf Association sometime in early 2018.
This will be the perfect event to cap off a stellar 2018
Season.
Qualifiers will again be conducted for both the LGA
Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships. Eight sites
around the state (Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Houma,
Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe, New Orleans, and
Shreveport) will conduct sectional qualifying rounds for
all entrants not exempt into Championship round play.
As in previous years, those players who attempt to qualify
but are unsuccessful will receive a $100 refund from their
$225 entry fee at the conclusion of the Championship
proper.
The LGA will also conduct five USGA qualifiers in
2018:
· U.S. Open Qualifier, OakWing GC, Alexandria,
May 10
· U.S. Junior Amateur & U.S. Girls’ Junior Qualifier,
Oakbourne CC, Lafayette, June 26
· U.S. Amateur Qualifier, East Ridge CC, Shreveport,
July 9
·
U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier, Le Triomphe G
& CC, Broussard, July 31
· U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier, Bayou Oaks at City
Park South Course, NOLA, August 23
