Trauma Symposium Addresses Trauma Care from Pre-Hospital to Discharge

[ HAMMOND , La .] — On Friday , Nov . 3 , North Oaks Shock Trauma Center , in partnership with the North Oaks Foundation and Southeastern Louisiana University ’ s School of Nursing , will host the region ’ s first “ Prepared for the Unexpected ” Trauma Symposium . Several regional and local leaders with expertise in trauma care from pre-hospital to discharge will headline the event .
The symposium will be held from 7:30 a . m . to 4:30 p . m . in the Student Union Ballroom on the Southeastern Louisiana University campus , located at 303 Texas Ave . in Hammond , La . Breakfast and lunch will be provided . The one-day conference is appropriate for physicians , nurses , allied health professionals , prehospital personnel and nursing students who practice or study in the areas of surgery , trauma surgery and emergency medicine .
Six contact hours of continuing nursing education will be provided upon successful completion of this activity . North Oaks Health System is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Louisiana State Nurses Association , an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center ’ s Commission on Accreditation .
Emergency Medical Technicians who attend the symposium will receive a certificate at its conclusion that can be used to obtain six continuing education hours .
Early bird registration is available through Friday , Oct . 13 at www . northoaks . org / trauma2017 . The registration fee is : $ 100 for physicians , nurses and healthcare professionals ; $ 75 for pre-hospital providers ; and $ 25 for nursing students . After Oct . 13 , the fee will increase to $ 120 for all registrants .
With the objective of exploring advances in management , techniques , protocols and guidelines for optimal care of the injured patient , the symposium will feature nine sessions :

• Pre-Hospital Trauma presented by Acadian Ambulance Services Medical Director Chuck Burnell , MD
• ED Thoracotomy presented by Rapides Regional Medical Center Trauma Medical Director Jeremy Timmer , MD
• Emergent Pelvic Trauma presented by North Oaks Orthopaedic Specialty Center Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon Brian Ladner , MD

The North Oaks Medical Center Level II Shock Trauma Center provides immediate , lifesaving care for injured patients 24 hours a day , 365 days a year for the state ’ s Region 9 , which includes Tangipahoa , Livingston , St . Helena , St . Tammany and Washington parishes . Trauma / critical care surgeons and specially trained nursing teams are available in-house 24 / 7 to treat trauma cases , including , but not limited to : falls , motor vehicle crashes and sports injuries . Emergency medicine physicians , orthopedic surgeons , neurosurgeons , anesthesiologists , ophthalmologists , radiologists and ear , nose and throat surgeons also provide coverage .
