Championship
by Mary Capouch
Kay Daniel, Covington, won her seventh
Louisiana Women’s Golf Association Mid- Amateur
Championship at Le Triomphe Golf & Country Club,
Broussard, Oct. 21-22. Her 75-82—157 victory in the
rain-soaked event was uncontested in the first year
the Mid-Amateur has been played in tandem with the
LWGA Senior Amateur. In addition to a delay due to
lightning on day one, the start of the second round of
play was delayed by rain along with high winds. Daniel
has now won ten LWGA titles, including the 1988
and 1989 Junior Girls as Kay Donaldson, the 2005
Amateur and was 2015 Amateur finalist.
Daniel recently was one of three players who
represented Louisiana in the final USGA Women’s
State Team Championship at La Campanas, Santa Fe,
New Mexico and has qualified for the U.S. Women’s
Mid-Amateur Championship, November 11-16 at
Champions Golf Club Cypress Creek Course in
Houston. Originally, slated for October 7-12 at Quail
Creek Country Club, Naples, Florida, the course,
clubhouse and surrounding area suffered significant
damage from Hurricane Irma, making it necessary
for the USGA to reschedule the Championship.
First Flight winner Christina Popp, Lafayette, aced
the par 3 eighth hole in the first round of the LWGA
Mid-Amateur, using a nine iron on the 96-yard hole
of her home course.
