juniorspin by Ian Auzenne Queen, Fontenot impress at Fall Classic ALEXANDRIA, La.--An unseasonably warm weekend greeted golfers at Links on the Bayou here for the Mizuno USSSA Fall Classic. Despite the hot conditions, the golf course was in perfect condition, setting up strong performances from the tour’s competitors. Chance Queen was dominant in the first round of the tournament, shooting a 71 en route to winning the Boys 15-18 division title. The Alexandria, La., resident recorded four birdies during the 36-hole event en route to finishing with a total of 146. Sam Tarpley, of Pollock, La, took second place honors by shooting 158. Colby Dupuis, of Pine Prairie, La., finished in third place by shooting 163. Also of note in the senior division: Jonas Valentine, of Jena, La., recorded two eagles during the tournament. The first came on the opening hole of the tournament; the second, on the 15th hole in the second round. He took fourth-place honors by shooting 164. John Landon Nobles was the most-improved golfer in the second round, shaving 15 strokes off his first round score. He shot a 77 in the second round to finish in fifth place at 171. Kale Fontenot had one of his best performances since joining the Mizuno USSSA Junior Golf Tour, coasting to a -3 (141) finish to win the Boys 12-14 division. Fontenot, of Lafayette, La., recorded 11 birdies during the tournament. Bryce Sutterfield, of Opelousas, La., claimed runner-up honors with a total of 149. Bennett Wicker, of Shreveport, La., finished in third place with a score of 160. Brown Snyder claimed most improved honors by shaving 14 strokes between the first and second rounds. He took fourth place by shooting 174. Gabriel Wartelle, of New Orleans by way of Masclaux, France, won the Boys 9-11 event, shooting 79 in a two- day, 18 hole tournament. “The playing conditions were unbelievable,” tour director and USSSA executive vice president Robert Boudreaux said. “I thank Trevor Lloyd and his staff at the Links for the help in making this tournament a success.” Louisiana USSSA will host two tournaments in the next few weeks. The first, the Fall Junior Shootout, will take place at Timberlane Country Club in Gretna on October 21-22. The deadline ` to register is October 19. The second, the Gobbler 8, is set for November 25-26 USSSA Club Fall Classic at Southern Mizuno Trace Country in Shreveport. The deadline to enter LEADERBOARD that tournament is November 22.
