rossetti wins medalist honors at US
Open qualifier
The “Road to Erin Hills” just got less
crowded following the U.S. Open Local
Qualifier at Southern Trace Country
Club on Monday. The Arthur Hills
designed course in Shreveport provided
a stern test for the top professional and
amateur golfers in the region.
Todd Rossetti of Sachse, Texas, fired
the low round of the day, a five-under par
67 (32/35) to win medalist honors. Also
advancing to Sectional Qualifying are:
Major Monzingo of Fort Worth, Texas,
2016 LGA Amateur Champion James
Anstiss of Hammond, Louisiana, and
Charles Neel White III of Austin, Texas.
If they make it through the next stage of
Sectional Qualifying, they will compete
in the 117th U.S. Open Championship to
be conducted at Erin Hills in Wisconsin,
June 15-18.
The U.S. Open Qualifier at Southern
Trace was one of 29 Qualifiers held in the
United States on Monday. There were
a total of 75 competitors at this Local
Qualifier conducted by the Louisiana
Golf Association. The Southern Trace
course was set up to a par 72 at 7,062
yards.
The course played firm and fast with
greens that rolled true and remained
consistent throughout the day. The
weather was sunny with temperatures
rising to the low 80s by mid-afternoon
with little to no breeze, making scoring
conditions ideal.

Chase Barnes of Houston, Texas,
beat Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge,
Louisiana in a playoff to decide first and
second alternates after both competitors
shot a three-under par 69.
This year there are 12 sectional sites
— 10 in the U.S., one in England, and
one in Japan. The international qualifiers
take place on May 22 (Japan) and May
29 (England), while the U.S. Sectional
Qualifiers will be conducted on June
5, also known as “Golf ’s Longest Day.”
Played over 36 holes in one day, sectional
qualifying is a test of skill and endurance,
with only a handful of available spots at
each site — the number of qualifying
spots is determined by the quality and
quantity of the field at each location.
