turnout at a recent event at Carter Plantation, and other
events are planned that allow the golfers to travel and
see other veterans they may not otherwise see.
Statistics are real too. With post traumatic stress
disorder leading to lifelong emotional battles and too
often self harm, those who have been deployed have
a special need to connect with others who understand
their experiences and can relate – offering unmatched
camaraderie.
The national VGA was founded by veterans in 2014
and this year, Louisiana has hosted its first events. With a
modest 29 members in Louisiana, the recent VGA Tour
event at Carter Plantation boasted the most players yet,
and Nunn says the organization is growing. National
numbers are 3,500 strong, and events are creating a
strong community of people who truly care.
Neighboring VGA groups often join each other and
help promote events and activities.
“We have one common goal of camaraderie and
support,” said Harold Cross of VGA Mississippi. “The
recent event at Carter Plantation was fun. It was hot, but
it was a great venue.”
The VGA hopes to return to Carter Plantation in the
future with an even bigger group. Nunn says he wants to
see even more family members and people who support
the veterans get involved as well.
“We all just need to talk to someone,” Nunn said.
“And the VGA Tour allows us time with other veterans.
The more the civilian side is aware of the issues veterans
face, the better things will be.”
