Clegg captures Jr US Am victory

Canton , Mississippi – Ford Clegg of Mountain Brook , Alabama , secured his spot in this year ’ s Junior US Amateur Championship on July 16 - 21 at Baltusrol Golf Club , Springfield , NJ .
Conditions at Deerfield Golf Club were not ideal as the heat index soared as the day went on , but Clegg battled the elements and posted a satisfying 3 under par 69 to capture the lead . five players advance to Big I National

Canton , Mississippi - After two days at Deerfield Golf Club , five golfers earned their way to the Big I National that will be held at the Daniel Island Club in Charleston , South Carolina Aug . 6-9 . Karley Whittington , Avery Weed , Connor Targonski , Jackson Mills and Christopher Baker will represent the state of Mississippi .
After the first day of golf , the Boys A Division had a three-way tie at the top as Hamp Fairey , Mills , and Reeves Johnson all shot rounds of 4 over par 76 . Spence Davis led the Boys B Division after a one over par 73 gave him an eight shot lead .
In the Boys C Division , William Marshall was able to end the day with a five shot cushion over Harlan Yerger after he posted a round of 84 .
Whittington was atop the Girls ( 13-18 ) Division after an opening 4 over par 75 . John Markow finished three ahead of the field in the Boys D Division after his one over par 37 , and Allie Myers ’ round of 43 gave her the lead in the Girls D Division . Lastly in the Girls E Division , Karstyn Altese had a round of even par 36 to sit in first place .
The final round brought much of the same excitement and low scores . Altese remained atop of the Girls E Division after her second round 41 . In the Girls D Division , Harper Hinckley had a second round of four over 40 to catapult herself into first place , while Markow maintained his lead in the second round with a score of 43 to win the Boys D Division .
Marshall continued his stellar play as he and Noah Harkins finished with two day totals of 168 that resulted in a playoff that Marshall would eventually win , giving him the Boys C Division title .
In the Boys B Division , Davis followed up his opening 73 with an greens and demanding pin locations .
William Wann of Birmingham , Alabama , posted an under par 70 , and Karsten Bryan of Golden , Mississippi , posted an even par 72 . Wann and Bryan will act as alternates to Clegg if he is unable to make the Junior Amateur Championship .
85 for a total of 158 and a two shot victory .
Whittington was able to continue her dominant play with a second round 74 that gave her a two day total of 149 , this gave her the first spot at the Big I and also the Girls ( 13-18 ) Division title . She was followed up by Weed who shot 78 in the final round to secure the second qualifying spot for the Girls . Altese and Madeleine Yu rounded out the top 4 and were awarded with the two alternate spots .
In the Boys 16-18 Division , Targonski shot up the leaderboard on the last day with a one-under par 71 to finish with a total of 148 this gave him the Boys 16-18 title and the first of three qualifying spots . He was followed up by Mills who finished four shots back after his final round 74 gave him a total of 150 .
Finally the last spot in the Big I had to be decided by a playoff as both Baker and Johnson finished tied at 154 . Baker would win the playoff on the first hole to grab the last spot .
