letter
particular cut by only one shot
and has had several tournaments
that looked a lot like this one.
He’s fighting his way to his first
professional cut, and I know it’s
just a stone’s throw away.
The funniest thing about
that trip was the bus ride home.
When I got on the bus, the
driver actually said he had never
stopped at the Luton Hoo bus
stop previously. I had to think
about it a minute, but I can see
why.
Winston Churchill is carved
into the history of the beautiful
landscape of this place. It is
enormous ... and gorgeous.
And there probably aren’t that
many people who ride the bus
to get there. The fact that I
don’t drive in England doesn’t
help my case much as there are
plenty of taxis going in an out,
but I couldn’t resist the 4-pound
round trip from the train station
(yes, another mode of dreaded
public transport) to the course.
I might have re-thought that
if I had known how long the
walk would be from the front
gate to Lawrence. Thank God
the weather was good. When I
left, I had figured out the hole
that would be closer to the gate
so that I would get back to my
students on time.
My point for this letter is
to remind you that no matter
where you are in the world,
look for the familiar ... and for
familiar faces. And find cool golf
courses. I was about three weeks
into my trip and was missing the
family. Running into Lawrence
somehow felt like home. He was
pretty happy to have someone
follow him around too.
For the last two years, I have
played team mom/lunch lady for
Southeastern’s golf team, and
I’m looking forward to having
the boys back for fall. Now that
we’ve had a few graduate and
move on, I’ve come to find that
I follow former lions too.
I was so fortunate to see
Lawrence Allan play on the
EuroPro Tour while I was in
England for study abroad. He
shot me a Facebook message
and said he would be at the
Luton Hoo Hotel course, and I
couldn’t resist going to watch.
I had to get back to London
for the students that evening,
so I was only able to watch five
holes, but it made me ready for
the fall season.
Lawrence has definitely been
working hard. He missed this Undergoing a little renovation, it’s the Luton Hoo Hotel in Luton, Bedfordshire, England.
