newsspin MGA hires Nick Callahan as Tourney Director The Mississippi Golf Association announced the addition of a Full Time Tournament Director Nick Callahan to its staff. The Mississippi Golf Association and the Mississippi Women’s Golf Association merged on January 1, 2018, and with the merger comes additional responsibilities and new championships to administer. The women’s championships, two new championships, an ever growing junior golf association and additional sanctioned events, have expanded the tournament offerings of the Association. “The tournament director position has become a full time tournament position, as the tournament workload and responsibilities continue to increase,” said Margo Coleman, Executive Director. Don Hershfelt and William Earl Morgan have both worked for the MGA as part-time Tournament Directors and been vital parts of the association. “We could not be where we are today, without the support of Don Hershfelt, who stepped in when William Earl retired,” said Brother Sandifer, MGA President. “Don was a great Tournament Director and mentor to our PJ Boatwright Interns. His service as a MGA board member, MGA President, USGA Committee member, and part time tournament director has been immeasurable to the association,” Coleman echoed Brother’s sentiments, in how grateful the association is to have had Hershfelt’s experience in making the MGA Championships better and better each year. Callahan, of Houston, Mississippi, a graduate of Mississippi State University, comes to the Mississippi Golf Association, as a former PJ Boatwright Intern of the MGA (2016-2017). Callahan brings a wealth of experience with junior golf and youth sports from his work with the Starkville Parks and Recreation, MSU Athletics and the MGA. 36 “We are excited to have Nick join the MGA family and love the energy he brings to the association,” said Coleman. “Emily and I are both products of the PJ Boatwright Internship program, which the USGA funds through grants to AGAs, and we look forward to adding another ‘Boatwright Alumni’ to the staff. Callahan’s time spent with the association through the off season in 2017, as we prepared for the new year and his familiarity with tournament work during the summers has made the transition a smooth one, according to staff. He took the reigns on March 1.
