Parent Council Careers Evening
Breadalbane Academy’s Parent Council is organising a Careers Evening focussed on ‘vocational’
training. It follows-on from the ‘universities’ evening held last academic year.
The event will be held on Thursday 21st April from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and will explore routes into training,
education and employment. The traditional lines between vocational and academic education are now
blurred and there are many options available for our young people to achieve further qualifications in
addition to the traditional Further Education (College) or Higher Education (University) routes. Some of
these, like the Modern Apprenticeship, have existed for a long time but have changed in recent years.
Some Modern Apprenticeships, for example, now require specific attainment in numeracy, literacy and
ICT (Information and Communications Technology) to gain entry. Further developments include the
Foundation Apprenticeship (where pupils can take College-level courses while still at school),
Higher/Advanced Apprenticeships which combine on-the-job training with degree-level qualifications and
a variety of graduate training programmes.
With such a variety now on offer the choice can be confusing. This event will give you the opportunity to
hear from industry and educational experts (including SSE), help you understand the options, and inform
your decisions. The evening will be split into two halves: the first will allow the invited guests to describe
the various training opportunities from their perspectives; and the second will be a ‘question-and-answer’
session. The evening will also provide the chance to discuss wider employability skills (i.e. those
attributes sought by employers beyond academic ability) and the application process, including on-line
assessments.
Further details will appear on the Parent Council Facebook page.
