Dakshinayana indicates the descent or southward moYement of the Sun from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricom . This movement can be compared with the gradual movement of the earth around the sun to the position , in which the rays of the sun fall over a 30 degree meridian of the South Pole perpendicularly on December 21st every year , known as the winter solstice .
