Sociology
What do you know about Sociology?
For the first time at AVS, Sociology is being offered to our
Year 9 students. It is an exciting journey for these
students who have started learning about the subject.
Sociology is an interesting subject as it gives students the
opportunity to study society and examine how society
works.
Many students are not quite sure what the subject is all about. Sociology is the study of human social
relationships and institutions. During this 3 year journey students will look at how sociologists study society,
the role of education in our society and the role and changing structure of the family. They will also study,
crime and deviance, the mass media and its effects on society, and finally social inequality in society. The
purpose of this, is to understand how human action and consciousness are both influenced and shaped, by
surrounding cultural and social structures.
So far, Years 9 and Year 10 have started looking at ‘Family’, its changing structures and its diverse nature.
Students are gradually making a link between why sociologists are interested in studying the family and the
role this very vital social institution plays in society.
We asked a few students how they felt about the subject so far! Here is what our Year 10s said
“I like sociology as it’s a new subject
for me to learn. At first I did not understand, but now I do. Sociology isn’t
just about learning the norms and values of our society, it’s about understanding things in life, for example,
how do lone parent families cope,
what are the effects of divorce and
how society works”
“I think that sociology is an insightful subject that is also
useful when applied in the real world. It is different from
any other subject I have studied before and this is why is
appeals to me. My favourite part is the different views and
theories and the in-depth study of them”

“I think that sociology is an interesting subject because it
really gives an insight into the real world. I think it really
helps me to understand why certain events occurs. My
favourite part of the subject is how truthful it is when dealing with different issues, I think this is because it is approached with a calm, respectful but honest attitude
